Keeping positive whilst waiting for something to happen

Many people reading this have probably been in some sort of limbo where you're waiting for something to happen. It could be a new job, moving place or an appointment, whatever it is there is always a point where you have done most of the prep work and can't put your anxiety into being busy sorting it out.

During this time it can be easy to work yourself up and feel anxious about something that's coming. It's easy to overthink why you're doing this and what's going to happen when it finally arrives but I am here to share some tips that help me cope. I hope they help you too.

Deep Breathing

I know, it seems like doing this is hippie-ish and a waste of time but even taking 5 minutes without any distractions and some calm acoustic music playing, just focusing on your breathing can really help to refocus your mind. It is also good to take time for yourself and not live in the immediacy of 2016, for just a little while.

Make a list and then put it away

There is probably a lot you can do before the day arrives but there will be things that you can't do until then. So, instead of obsessing over the things you can't do yet, make a list of them and detail down the dates you can do them and then put it away. Put it somewhere you can't see it every day but you can pull it out and look it over when the time comes. I am especially bad at doing this but it doesn't mean you'll forget it, it just means it's not constantly in your face for you to get stressed about.

Have good experiences

Now I'm not saying drop everything and go to Barcelona for a vacation but go for a walk around your home; spend time getting a treat for dinner or eating out. Maybe go strawberry picking and meet up with friends for tea or cocktails. Try to have experiences that don't cost too much but that make you aprreciate where you are in life at the moment and what you have. It's very easy to get wrapped up in where you're going and your next step so have time for right now.

Remember why you're doing this

With getting everything organised it is sometimes difficult to sift through the anxious and stressed thoughts and actually find the real reasons you chose to do this. If you're moving job, you got the job based on your skills and personality so they aren't going to fire you just because you didn't get everything perfect before you arrived. If you're moving house, remember that where you're going is new and a chance to meet a new community and explore a different place. You will be ok, everything works out eventually anyway and decisions are a part of life. If you didn't do anything that scared you, well, you wouldn't be living life.

Take care
x
